About Ceremonial Cacao

Here's the thing about cacao. Most of what's sold online isn't ceremonial cacao at all, it's cocoa powder with a nice label on it.

This is the whole Criollo bean, fermented, roasted and ground in Guatemala by Keith's Cacao.

Nothing added, nothing taken out.

HOW CACAO SUPPORTS YOU

Cacao's magnesium helps the body soften and let go of tension. The difference between white-knuckling a stressful day and actually getting through it.

Theobromine gives a steady kind of energy, no spike, no crash. It's also a vasodilator rather than a stimulant, it opens the blood vessels instead of firing up the nervous system the way caffeine does, which is part of what people mean when they talk about cacao being heart-opening. The lift without the 3pm crash, and more room to actually feel things.

Phenylethylamine lifts mood and connection, so you come away from your cup wanting to reach out to someone, or simply enjoying your own company a bit more.

Anandamide, the bliss molecule, supports calm and expansion. It's the reason ten minutes with cacao can feel like it stretched further than the clock says it did.

Flavanols support circulation and clarity, helping clear the fog so your thoughts actually land instead of circling.

Safety Information

Cacao is safe for most people.

But…

If you have been advised not to exercise due to a heart condition, cacao is not suitable for you.

If you are pregnant and are in your first or second trimester, 28g of cacao is the highest suitable daily dose. If you are in your third trimester, 20g is the highest suitable dose. If you are breastfeeding, start with 20g to see how your baby reacts.

If you are taking mood altering medication and are on a high dose or a mix of medication, 20g is the highest suitable daily dose. If you are on a medium dose, 28g is the highest suitable dose. If you are on a low dose you may consume up to 42.5g in one dose.

    Preparing Your Cacao

    Slow down, give yourself a few minutes. That's the whole point.

    • 42.5g for a deeper cup, 15 to 25g for everyday. Start lower if unsure, more isn't better.

    • Chop finely with a sharp knife, it melts easier.

    • Mix with a little hot water first, not boiling, into a smooth paste.

    • Add the rest of your liquid and heat gently. I like half water, half barista coconut milk, but you do you.

    • Cinnamon, cayenne, vanilla, honey or maple syrup, if you like it sweeter. Experiment.

    Pour into your favourite mug and take your time with it.
